CAPE'S UNIQUE STRATEGY CAPE's primary strategy for developing new understandings of school improvement through the arts is through long term partnerships between teachers and artists/arts organizations. CAPE has consciously sought to "bring the arts to the table" in broad-based discussions about school improvement. CAPE's work in the classroom is organized into five major initiatives: 1. Veteran Partnerships 2. The Arts Education Design Seminar Program (AEDSP) 3. Developing Early Literacies Through the Arts (DELTA) 4. Supporting Community Arts Learning Environments (SCALE) 5. Building Curriculum, Community and Leadership Through the Arts (BCCLA) 6. WHY ARTS INTEGRATION? "When well planned and implemented, arts integration is one of the most effective ways for a wide range of students with a wide range of interests, aptitudes, styles, and experiences to form a community of active learners taking responsibility for and ownership of their own learning." Renaissance in the Classroom, pg. xxvi WHY TEACHER/ARTIST PARTNERSHIPS? Teacher/artist partnerships challenge both partners to broaden their thinking and to expand their effective practice. "The presence of the arts in a school acts as a leveling force. It creates a space a 'demilitarized zone' in which educators can reflect on their teaching practice, as well as a generative force, creating an exotic terrain in which educators can reconfigure their relationships."
