Course instructor: Cynthia Weiss, School Programs Partnerships Manager, Columbia College Office of Community Arts Partnerships. This fun course guides teachers and artists through the processes of text literacy and arts literacy in a way that can turn reluctant learners into excited readers and writers! Teachers and artists from the CAPE network, experienced at effective literacy development through the arts, will present their actual classroom practice. The course will draw on text from the book Renaissance in the Classroom, edited by Gail Burnaford, Cynthia Weiss, and Arnold Aprill. Areas covered include: Arts, Literacy, and the Bilingual Learner; Developmentally Appropriate Literacy Development for Primary, Middle School, and High School Learners; Understanding Genre in and Through the Arts; Reading Comprehension and Aesthetic Response; Using Writer¹s Notebooks; Meaningful Assessments. ARTISTS' BOOKS AND LITERACY Course instructors: Mary Tepper, Artist/Educator, CAPE artists and staff. Book making provides special means for teachers and students to access literacy. Students have deeper levels of ownership of both the texts they read, and the texts they write, when they also create the medium in which those texts are presented. This course will provide teachers with the methods to create a variety of exciting book forms. No prior art/book making experience is necessary. EARLY CHILDHOOD LITERACY AND THE ARTS Course instructors: Gigi Schroeder, DePaul University, Scott Sikkema, CAPE. How do young children conceive stories? Are there connections between writing and drawing? How might materials engender stories? These questions and more will be addressed as we explore how the arts enhance literacy development in young children from preschool through 2nd grade. Some topics to be explored include documentation, nonlinear story formats, using other media for telling stories, and transforming words into works of art. |
HANDS-ON MEDIA: WORKING WITH WHAT YOU HAVE Course instructor: Deidre Searcy, Multimedia Consultant. Media Literacy can be defined as the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and produce information through a variety of mass media forms and technologies. Through this 15 hour hands-on course, teachers will obtain the vocabulary and skills necessary for engaging in the development of meaningful, integrated, media arts curriculum in their school. DOCUMENTING YOUR PRACTICE Course Instructors: Scott Sikkema, Program Director, CAPE; Arnold Aprill, Executive Director, CAPE; Gigi Schroeder-Yu, Instructor, DePaul University; and Jerry Stefl, Instructor, School of the Art Institute and Retired Art Teacher, Sandberg High School. Does your school have an effective arts program? Are you looking for ways to improve your arts integrated instruction? CAPE's documentation and action research methods have become pace-setters for the field. Teachers and artists who have experience in team-teaching and arts integration will learn how to become action researchers in the classroom by documenting partnership development, teaching practices, and student learning processes. CAPE's inquiry based approach organizes teachers' and artists' thinking by creating frameworks for reflective practices and the assessment of student learning. FEES Courses are scheduled in three 5-hour sessions or five 3-hour sessions at your school, and based on the presenters' availability. Each course for up to 30 individuals is $4,500, which includes two to three presenters per session, all materials and supplies, and refreshments. For more information, please contact CAPE at or call 312/870-6140. |
