Meet the Board

Gerald Cadoree

How did you learn about CAPE?
I posted a profile on Boardlink at Chicago United. Amy Rasmussen, CAPE's Executive Director, found my profile and contacted me. Amy and several board members educated me on CAPE, what it is doing and where it is going.

Why did you decide to become a CAPE board member?
CAPE's mission and vision aligned closely with my own. I have worked with several CPS schools in the past and have a background in the arts so it was a natural fit.

What do you hope to achieve at CAPE?
A measurable, positive impact on the lives of those we serve. Through acting, I learned to be very flexible, so as the needs of the organization change I'll adapt how I serve it to meet those needs. The important thing is to make a difference.

Do you have a personal connection to the arts?
I have a degree in drama and studied classical singing. I studied at the Moscow Art Theater School in Russia for a semester in college and it developed me a lot as a person. I attribute a great deal of my success to what I learned about myself and others through the arts.

Are you involved with other nonprofit organizations?
I'm financially supportive of several organizations and am in discussions with a few about serving on their board.

CAPE Veterans and Herbert School special education teachers Jesl Cruz, Jack Kono, teaching artist Robert Possehl and student artist Larry take pride in their participation in the 2010 International VSA Festival to be held in Washington, D.C. at the US Department of Education in June. The Festival will showcase 23 postcards created by students with disabilities through the Arte Postale program. Together, the artwork – from students from 12 countries and eight states – tell a very meaningful story about what students around the world value.

Congratulations to Larry and the great Veteran Partnership team at Herbert!

Celebrate CAPE, a friendraiser event organized by CAPE's board and staff, took place at Louis A. Agassiz Elementary School on February 18, 2010. In this interactive and fun evening, participants had the opportunity to mingle with other arts education supporters, learn more about the organization and participate in an art project led by teacher Akemi Taguchi and teaching artist Ellen Tristchler. Agassiz has been a CAPE school since 1992 and it is a great example of how arts integrated teaching and learning can transform a school into a dynamic and engaging community.

Guests also participated in a "treasure hunt" designed by CAPE's Founding and Creative Director Arnold Aprill, in which they had to search for pieces of artwork displayed throughout the school's hallways. The teams that completed the hunt in the fastest time received student artwork as a reward.

Treasure Hunt winners included (from left to right): Sehban Zaidi, Roger Weitz (Chicago Opera Theater), Avery Cranston. Dawnmarie Domingo (CAPE Board), Jorge Félix (CAPE Advisory Board), Margie Heffernan and Andrew Cretors (C. Cretors & Co.).

The National Association of Latino Arts and Culture and the Ford Foundation have awarded CAPE and Habla a grant to launch an initiative that will foster exchanges of educators and teaching artists across countries. The goal of the grant is to serve communities and schools in Mexico and the United States by deepening and documenting an international artistic collaboration based in multilingual and arts integrated teaching.

This February, 2010 CAPE Founding and Creative Director Arnold Aprill, teacher Mary Beth Werner and teaching artist William Estrada (who collaborate at Telpochalli School) visited Habla to participate in conversations with local educators and artists. In addition theysharedtheir work with the Mérida, Mexico community. This summer the Chicago team will return to Habla to teach in the Habla Summer Lab School, offer workshops to the community, and participate in the 2010 Habla Teacher Institute.

An article about the collaboration between Mexican and U.S. teachers and artists was published in the Diario de Yucatán.

In February, CAPE consultant Gigi Schroeder-Yu, Milliken University pre-service teachers, and CAPE Founding and Creative Director Arnold Aprill presented the workshop/demonstration lecture "Creativity in the 21st Century: Learning through the Arts and Integrated Curriculum" to a wide range of educators from central Illinois. The teachers were grateful to have time to think and share with each other across grades and geographies.

Hawthorne Scholastic Academy has been a CAPE Veteran partner since the first years of CAPE. This year they have been busy analyzing trees.

At the school's March Curriculum Fair, kindergarten teacher Wendee Schavocky and teaching artist Megan Williamson presented some images of the amazing work done by these young student artists.

At Telpochcalli's after school SCALE dance program with Jazmin Corona and Maria Navas, students have been busy rehearsing a dance that will be featured at this year's Telpochcalli Benefit. Proceeds from the event, which will be held at the school on March 19 from 6 to 8 p.m., will benefit Telpochcalli's art programs.

In early February, Dr. Larry Scripp of the New England Conservatory of Music administered the first in a series of portfolio conferences with Lee, Eberhart, and Healy Elementary schools. CAPE is testing this new assessment tool as another means of capturing the intersection between teacher and student learning. The development of this tool is part of the research for the three-year PAIR grant.
