Follow this link to donate to CAPE. Meet the Board Paula S. Carlin What is your occupation? I have been a development officer for Roosevelt University since April 2008. Previously, I spent many years as a private bank professional. How long have you been a CAPE board member? Eight years. How did you get connected with CAPE for the first time? I made a personal decision to volunteer my time and resources to an organization that provided an important "service", was financially sound and had a great staff and board so I would stay committed for many years. One of my client's at the time was and is still today, a very respected individual in the philanthropic field. So I asked her to recommend several organizations that might fit my criteria. CAPE was one of the organizations she suggested. I learned more about CAPE's mission, its valuable work and then met several staff and board members. The decision was really a "no brainer". What do you like about the organization? I am very proud of the impact CAPE has on the learning and success of so many deserving students in the Chicago public schools. I also have great respect for the staff who make it all happen. Where would you like to see CAPE in the future? I would like to see CAPE widely recognized and supported as the premier arts education organization in Chicago by practicioners as well as individuals outside the field of education. ![]() Pleae welcome Rashida Walker, CAPE's new Program Associate. Rashida will be supporting the International Baccalaureate Teaching Arts Project, among other program initiatives. George Rogers Clark Fine Arts and Technology Magnet Cluster School, with the support of Principal Felicia Stewart, has engaged CAPE as the school’s primary arts partner. Through CAPE, the school is working with acclaimed artist-in-residence Mirtes Zwierzynski to bring parents, students and community members together to create a community mural. |
|||||
| On November 18, Mirtes conducted a parent and child workshop to jump-start the initial planning and design. Magnet Cluster Lead Teacher Marsha Looney commented, “Our school pays serious attention to visual literacy as a significant contributor to students’ higher order thinking skills. The school is a hidden gem of student achievement and community involvement.” - - - - |

CAPE was delighted to receive an e-mail from our beloved colleague Eric Booth (one of the world's most innovative, forward-thinking, and big-hearted arts education advocates): Only one day into my travels in Scotland and Australia, and at least five people have cited CAPE's influence. CAPE was all over the workshop by our colleagues in Inverness, and was mentioned in several conversations. And always with such fondness for inspirational and catalytic impact. My lord, but it is amazing to witness such influence, the result of being generous, smart and loving, and hearing others' needs and offering deeply resonant answers. - - - - ![]() Join international educators and artists at the 2010 Habla Teacher Institute Into the Labyrinth July 10-17, 2010 in Mérida, Yucatán, México. CAPE is a partner in the Institute. Click Teacher Institute for detailed information. - - - - On November 23, CAPE presented Valerie Hannon of the Innovation Group, London, as a guest speaker on the shifting landscape of teaching and learning in the 21st Century. She discussed trends in where we learn (from mainly in schools to increasingly in cultural centers, open campuses, and virtual sites), who we learn from (from mainly teachers to increasingly also other skilled adults, peers, and social networks), and primary learning modes (from mainly instruction to increasingly interaction, collaboration, and learning by doing and discovery). Hosted by the Hyde Park Art Center, the presentation was followed by a lively discussion among the attending education directors of arts organizations. - - - - ![]() CAPE continues as a consultant to the Culturally Responsive Arts Education initiative of the Pittsburgh Public Schools (supported by the Heinz Endowments), in which teachers and artists are collaborating to better serve African American students. CAPE is observing and helping document (through both face to face meetings and distance communication) arts integrated lessons designed to connect academic content with the arts of the African Diaspora, and is assisting the schools and artists in critiquing and improving the quality of their collaborations. - - - - ![]() On November 20, CAPE conducted its first on-line professional development session, assisting teachers at P.S. 118 in the Bronx develop an arts integrated unit with its local partner arts-in-education organization DreamYard Project on the study of ancient Egypt. At the first professional development work shop, the new partners were introduced to CAPE’s methodology and philosophy of arts integration. Veteran Teacher Jesl Cruz presented them with some insights on what arts integration meant to a teacher, and artist Jessica Hudson worked with the teams on ways they could integrate the arts in their classrooms. Up next for the teams are workshops in artist/teacher collaboration, and documentation and research strategies. |
