Since 1992, Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education (CAPE) has inspired thousands of Chicago public school students to open their minds to learning by integrating photography, video, music, theater, painting, creative writing and other art forms into their study of math, social studies, science and other school subjects.

On October 25, 2007, Thomas J. Waters Elementary School was host to CAPE's first Report to the Community. At the gathering, CAPE board and staff members, along with researcher Dr. Gail Burnaford and collaborator and parent Pete Leki, presented the state of CAPE to an audience of about 70 teachers, artists, school administrators and parents.

The gathering was a way to bring CAPE's Annual Report to life – to present an overview of the past year and a glimpse at the next to friends, supporters, peers and partners in an atmosphere familiar to all: amid student artwork at a Chicago Public School that has been an arts integration leader and co-explorer with CAPE for 10 years.

CAPE Board of Directors President Nancy Jones Emrich spoke of the role CAPE played in over 100 city schools, where "individual student lives are changing – boldly changing students' whole lifetimes as a result."

She talked about the thoughts and theories of people like Lois Hetland from Harvard's Project Zero and her newly published book on Studio Habits of Mind, and David Perkins, and his distillation of education as either Export Education (where students are taught about things) or Import Education (where students are engaged in their learning through complex and significant endeavors).

Nancy noted how these ideas were embodied in CAPE programs, and how teachers, artists and students were thereby empowered to create and experience change.
