THE CHICAGO SCHOOLS QUILTS: A Millennium Project, 1999-2000
LaSalle Language Academy / 6th Grade
A partnership between the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, CAPE, and the Art Institute of Chicago, this initiative showcased curriculum content in all disciplines through the medium of traditional and contemporary classroom quilts. Chicago Schools Quilts: A Millennium Project was inspired by the discovery of beautiful quilts being created in schools throughout the city. These works were being created by teachers and students at all grade levels, going beyond community, ethnicity, income, or any other qualifiers that usually define our schools. Without formal prompting or official guidelines, many teachers and students were engaged in one of America's oldest cultural traditions: they were quilting to tell their stories.
The potential for a city-wide initiative to recognize these quilts was clear, as was the interest in supporting a process for creating new quilts. CAPE, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs decided to collaborate to make it happen.
Some of the finest existing quilts were showcased at the Chicago Cultural Center. Then, twenty schools participated in a series of workshops to assist teachers in generating new quilts. These new quilts were exhibited at the Art Institute, at the Cultural Center, at the Chicago Public Schools Board of Education, and at neighborhood libraries. The Art Institute of Chicago published a professional catalogue of these social fabrics. Chicago Schools Quilts: A Millennium Project was made possible through the generous support of: Jewel-Osco, Marshall Field's and Chicago Cultural Center Foundation.
