Nick Jaffe is a musician, audio engineer, and K-8 certified teacher who lives in Chicago. Nick grew up in New York City and Rome, Italy. He graduated from Yale with a degree in History and subsequently spent ten years working for the airlines as an aircraft mechanic and avionics instructor. Nick has taught a variety of subjects to kids and adults including English as a second language, music, digital audio and video production and the sport of judo. He has spent the past several years developing and teaching an integrated curriculum in which elementary school students learn about science, technology, music and writing by creating original works of recorded music and video in a student directed studio. CAPE's support and assistance has been absolutely essential to this work.
As a teacher Nick's focus is on developing rigorous curricula that give students the opportunity to do real, self-conceived and directed, socially useful work in music and other fields. He believes that some of the most intense, integrative learning in any field takes place when students are doing such work. Nick has taught his digital music curriculum at Ariel Community Academy, The University of Chicago Lab School, and full-time for two years at The Choir Academy of the Chicago Children's Choir. He currently teaches in the CAPE-funded SCALE after-school program at Waters Elementary. Nick plays guitar and flute for the Chicago area bands Soul People and Thrillhouse Collective and operates Shysoul Studios. He practices and teaches judo at Tohkon Judo Academy. Nick lives in the Andersonville neighborhood with his fabulous wife Susan Kim, an English professor, musician and judo champion.
